Why is Jordan Clarkson playing for the Philippines at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023?
Clarkson’s Filipino heritage comes from her mother as her maternal grandmother is from Bacolor, Pampanga, Philippines.
“I’m proud, I wear it every day.My grandmother tattooed it on my heart.”Clarkson said of his Filipino heritage at the All-Star weekend in 2023.
He and Rockets star guard Jalen Green made NBA history in the 2021-22 season, marking the first meeting between Filipino-American players on Philippine Heritage Night when Utah hosted Houston.
Clarkson made his debut for the Philippines national team at the 2018 Asian Games.
He had previously attempted to compete for his country but failed to meet FIBA’s eligibility criteria because he didn’t have a Philippine passport until he was 16 years old
He has now been recognized as a Filipino naturalized player and is committed to playing for his country at the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup as well as future FIBA tournaments.
