Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit shows positive developments, projects 6.6 million electric vehicles on the road by 2030

More than 6 million electric vehicles will be on Philippine roads by 2030, if the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP) prediction announced during the 11th Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit (PEVS) in 2023 comes true.Real.

“This is a huge number compared to our current starting point, but with the upward push of the industry, the support of Malacañang and all relevant government agencies as well as the With rapid private sector adoption of all forms of electric vehicles, this goal is achievable,” Edmund Araga, president of EVAP, told CleanTechnica, emphasizing the important role of promoting promote and enforce Republic Act No.11697 or the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA).

“Our estimates show that by 2030, more than half of the planned 6.6 million electric vehicles will still be two-wheelers.

Currently, about 60% of electric vehicles in the Philippines are two-wheelers,” EVAP Honorary Chairman Ferdinand Raquelsantos said while sharing his views on the industry during a pre-event press conference.

He also highlighted how effective Decree No.12, which complements the EVIDA law, is to promote more EVS in the country.

Based on this prediction, by 2030 there will be 3.6 million electric motorbikes, and based on current sales trends, electric threewheelers could account for 1.2 million units, equivalent to 25% of the market share .

This means the remaining 15% will be shared between electric buses, commercial vehicles and equipment.600,000 (10%), leaving about 5% or 300,000 for cars by 2030.

Bold predictions for the Philippine electric vehicle market depend on effective implementation.

Government policies aim to spur growth, especially in manufacturing and key infrastructure such as charging stations.

However, these estimates are flexible and will change as government policies become more responsive to market demand and more people adopt electric vehicles.

It should be noted that EVAP played a central role in the formulation and development of the law that entered into force on 15 April 2022.

This law defines government policy on efficiency, conservation, adequacy and sustainability steady energy.

    What The EVIDA Does

Under the EVIDA Act, businesses and government agencies are required to include electric vehicles (EVs) in at least 5% of their vehicle fleets.

The law also provides electric vehicle users with reserved parking spaces equipped with electric vehicle charging stations at public and private facilities, ensuring convenient charging.

Additional incentives under this law include exemptions from traffic code regulations, priority registration, and expedited processing of franchise applications for public transportation fleets.

To strengthen the local electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing sector, EVAP leaders are lobbying for government incentives.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry is actively studying a program similar to the Global Automotive Revitalization Strategy, which would provide subsidies for domestically produced electric vehicles and components.

Furthermore, Executive Order (EO) 12 plays a key role in improving the cost competitiveness of electric vehicles in the Philippine market.

This EO eliminates customs duties on imported fully assembled electric vehicles for a period of five years.

EVAP is also encouraged by the exemption of excise tax on electric vehicles and a 50% reduction of excise tax on hybrid vehicles, thanks to the tax reform of the Acceleration and Inclusion Law.

    What Is Next For PEVS?
