Goring weakens; Typhoon may make landfall in the Philippines
MANILA, Philippines – Goring has weakened to a typhoon and is expected to leave the Philippine area of responsibility on Thursday while a severe approaching tropical storm is expected.

During a press conference, PAGASA weather expert Veronica Torres said Goring’s eye is located 245 km northeast of Casiguran, Aurora with maximum sustained winds near the storm’s center of 155 km/h and gusts of up to
190 km. /H.it is moving northeast at 15 km/h.
“Generally for today (Monday) and tomorrow (Tuesday) it will move northeast or north, then, generally northwest, will move near the Batanes area with a possible the possibility of ‘a landfall scenario because the Batanes area is in the Goring probability zone,’ said Torres.
Torres added that 50 to 100 mm of rain is expected in Batanes, Babuyan Island, the northern mainland of Cagayan, Apayao and Ilocos Norte.
Goring will also strengthen the southwest monsoon and bring 100 to 200 mm of rainfall to Western Mindoro; 50 to 100 mm in Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, northern part of Palawan including Calamian and Cuyo Islands, Antique, southwestern part of Iloilo and northwestern part of Aklan.
On Wednesday, 100 to 200 mm of rain is expected in Zambales, Bataan and Western Mindoro, while 50 to 100 mm in Metro Manila, Rizal, Bulacan, Cavite and Batangas, she added.
Meanwhile, the state weather agency continues to monitor the severe tropical storm outside PAR, which is expected to strengthen into a hurricane but is unlikely to directly affect any areas of the country.
It is expected to go into PAR on Wednesday night or Thursday morning and will strengthen the southwest monsoon, especially in the western part of the country.
Affected family
The National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) says about 2,302 families, or a total of 7,919 people, have been affected by Goring.
Yesterday, at least 538 families, or 1,948 people, remained in 53 different evacuation centers in the affected provinces, mainly in northern Luzon.
The NDRRMC said the affected areas include the Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Calabarzon, MIMAROPA, Western Visayas and Cordillera Administrative Region.
In Area 2 alone, reports indicate that the estimated cost of damage to infrastructure currently stands at 40 million pesos, while agricultural damage remains undisclosed.
In the Ilocos and CAR areas, the NDRRMC said affected families and/or individuals have so far received cleaning kits and household food packages worth P25,910.
In Ilocos Norte, heavy rain from Goring caused landslides that blocked major roads in Barangay Liliputan, Pinili town; Barangay Pancian in the town of Pagudpud and Barangay Adams in the municipality of Adams, police chief Colonel Julius Suriben reported yesterday.
Suriben said 15 families were rescued in Adams at the height of Goring and Governor Matthew Marcos Manotoc was responding to all the needs of affected families.
In Negros Occidental, heavy rains caused widespread flooding in eight towns, forcing thousands of people to evacuate yesterday.
Provincial administrator Rayfrando Díaz revealed that about 3,838 Negren were affected by the floods that began on Sunday evening, in the municipalities of Pontevedra, Don Salvador Bernedicto, San Enrique, Pulupandan, Vallodolid and Murcia and the City of Bago.
In Bacolod city, heavy rain forced more than 10,000 residents from 13 barangays to evacuate. They are currently staying in public schools as temporary shelters.
Classes and work in government offices are suspended today in the towns of Bacolod and La Carlota, as well as in the municipalities of EB Magalona and Moises Padilla.
Mayor Isabela Irene Montilla and Pulupandan Mayor Miguel Peña also ordered the suspension of classes in their respective towns.
The admission of patients to Bago City Hospital was also temporarily suspended due to flooding of the ground floor.
